Rorbuer in Lofoten

A rorbu is a cabin in a fishing village built to house visiting fishermen during the seasonal fisheries. Few are needed for that today, and across Lofoten many have been converted into places to stay, from simple cabins to renovated houses by the sea.

Built for the Lofoten fishery

Each winter, spawning cod known as skrei arrive in the waters around Lofoten, and the Lofoten fishery for them has been important for many centuries. Fishermen came from across Northern Norway, sailing and rowing long distances in open boats; in 1896, 32,000 took part. In the fishing villages they rented rorbuer to live in during the season. Museum Nord describes the rorbu tradition as at least 1,000 years old, and the sagas credit King Øystein, who reigned from 1103 to 1128, with building rorbuer at Vágar, near present-day Kabelvåg.

Rorbuer stood at the shore, often on wooden posts above the water, close to the boats. Visit Lofoten describes them as usually having two rooms, one for gear and one with beds, and Visit Norway notes that up to twelve men could share a cabin furnished with four bunks. The dark red paint dates from a time when paint made with cod liver oil was the cheapest available.

The væreier system

In many fishing villages the rorbuer belonged to the væreier, the landowners and merchants whose system peaked in the mid-1800s. They owned the cabins and the drying racks, bought the fish and gave credit in the village shop. The Lofoten Museum in Kabelvåg shows the contrast between a væreier's manor house, completed in 1815, and the fishermen's cabins.

Rorbuer today

Demand fell as fewer fishermen took part in the fishery and crews began living on board larger vessels, and letting rorbuer to tourists became common. Preserved rorbuer survive at Nusfjord, which has 28, and at Å. Today's rorbuer range from basic to luxurious and from small cabins to whole houses by the sea, and some are part of complexes where former fish-receiving buildings now hold a reception and restaurant.
