Reine

Reine stands on a peninsula on the south-east side of Moskenesøya, outside the mouth of Reinefjorden, and is the administrative centre of Moskenes municipality. The E10 crosses the mouth of the fjord on bridges between islands, and Reineveien leads off it into the village. About 300 people live here, according to Visit Lofoten. The Lofoten fishery plays a particularly important role, with fish landing and processing and some mechanical industry. Reine became a trading post in 1775, and part of it was burned by German forces after the British raid on Lofoten in December 1941.

What is there Reine has rorbu accommodation, restaurants, a petrol station and the Lofotodden National Park visitor centre. The Reinebringen trail (484 m) starts from the car park in Reine's outer harbour and climbs Sherpa-built steps; Visit Lofoten strongly advises against the hike in winter. Boats cross Reinefjorden from Reine to Vindstad, the start of the walk to Bunes beach, and also serve the roadless settlements in the fjords.

Getting here Visit Lofoten suggests the Bodø–Moskenes ferry and a bus to Reine, or a flight to Leknes or Svolvær and a bus onwards. Store norske leksikon names Leknes as the nearest airport for Moskenes and Stamsund as the nearest Hurtigruten call.

Who it suits Hikers, photographers and travellers who want shops and restaurants close by while staying on Moskenesøya.

Things to consider Reine is a working fishing village with narrow streets. Visit Lofoten asks visitors to use the public car parks, watch for people working around the harbour and respect residents' privacy. Reinebringen is one of the most popular trails in Norway, and Visit Lofoten warns of crowds, especially in July.
