Lofoten in 7 days: Svolvær to Å with a Trollfjord boat trip
A week along the E10 with six bases: two nights in Svolvær and a boat into Trollfjorden, then Henningsvær, Ballstad, Ramberg and Reine, ending at Å near the Moskenes ferry. Kvalvika, Reinebringen and Bunes beach each get their own day.
Where the itinerary goes
A week lets the drive along the E10 be split into short days with a change of base after one or two nights. This plan spends two nights in Svolvær and one each in Henningsvær, Ballstad, Ramberg, Reine and Å, finishing within a few kilometres of the Moskenes ferry to Bodø. The longest driving day, from Henningsvær to Ballstad with detours to Hov and Eggum, is about 125 km on the OSRM router, with stops excluded.
Compared with the five-day plan, it adds a boat trip from Svolvær into Trollfjorden, which has no road; Eggum on Vestvågøya's outer coast, a detour on the Norwegian Scenic Route; a full day for Kvalvika and Ryten; and separate days for Reinebringen and Bunes beach, so neither has to be rushed to fit a sailing.
Much of the walking is seasonal. Visit Lofoten gives May to September for Reinebringen and Mannen, April to October for the Bunes trail, and spring to autumn for Fløya and for Kvalvika and Ryten. Between November and March, use the winter seven-day plan instead, which trades the summits for museums, a winter RIB trip and northern lights tours, and keeps the driving to the middle of the day.
Day five crosses the Nappstraum tunnel, which since August 2026 has been closed at night apart from a 02:00 passage.
Where to stay on this route
Two nights in Svolvær avoid packing up on the boat-trip day, and Visit Lofoten says the town has the largest selection of accommodation in Lofoten. Henningsvær puts Festvågtinden and the village's restaurants within reach without driving in the evening. Ballstad, off the Fv818, has rorbuer by a working harbour and is about 11 km from Leknes if you need shops; Leknes is the alternative. Ramberg has a beach, shops and a petrol station and is about 7 km from the Kvalvika path; Fredvang is closer still. Reine and Å put the last two days on the doorstep, and Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Moskenes or Sørvågen work as well for those nights.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrive in Svolvær
Svolvær Airport, Helle, is about 6 km east of the town; Hurtigruten ships dock in the centre, and an express boat links Svolvær with Bodø via Skrova. Settle in and walk out to Svinøya, one of the bridged islands the town has spread onto. If you arrive early and the season allows, climb the Sherpa staircase towards Djevelporten on Fløya, which starts near the centre; Visit Lofoten rates the stairs easy and the rest of the route medium to demanding. Otherwise, the Lofoten War Memorial Museum, which Visit Lofoten says probably holds Norway's most extensive collection of Second World War uniforms, stands beside the Hurtigruten pier.
Driving Svolvær Airport, Helle to Svolvær: about 5 km and 10 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Day 2: A boat into Trollfjorden
Trollfjorden, in Raftsundet, has no road, so the only way in is by boat. Visit Lofoten says the mouth is about 100 m wide and lists several summer options from Svolvær: RIB sea eagle safaris, sailing boats, charter cruises and a hybrid electric boat. Hurtigruten also enters the fjord. RIB Lofoten's winter trip runs about 2 hours from Torget, with flotation suits provided. Spend the rest of the day in Svolvær, perhaps on XXLofoten's two-hour beginners' fishing trip aboard MS Symra, a boat in service since 1917, or at Magic Ice on the quay. No driving is needed today.
Day 3: Kabelvåg and Festvågtinden
Leave Svolvær for Storvågan, just west of Kabelvåg, and spend the morning at SKREI: the Lofoten Museum's 1815 manor house and rorbuer, the aquarium with its seal and otter feedings, and more than 200 works by Kaare Espolin Johnson in the Espolin Gallery. Vågan Church, a timber church from 1898 known as the Lofoten Cathedral, is in Kabelvåg. Turn onto the Fv816 and, if conditions allow, climb Festvågtinden from Festvåg: 1.3 km each way and 60–90 minutes up, with loose rock and a short scramble near the top. Spend the evening in Henningsvær, whose cultural environment was protected by royal decree in 2022.
Driving Svolvær to Henningsvær: about 26 km and 35 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Day 4: Hov, Borg, Eggum and Haukland
Cross to Gimsøya and turn north to Hov, where Visit Lofoten points to the beaches and the mountain Hoven. Continue to the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg, then take the side road to Eggum on the outer coast, a rest area and detour on the Norwegian Scenic Route; Visit Lofoten suggests walking the trail in the nature reserve there. Head south to Haukland beach and, from May to September, the Mannen path. Finish on the Fv818 in Ballstad, one of the largest fishing villages in Lofoten according to Store norske leksikon. At about 125 km, this is the longest drive of the week.
Driving Henningsvær to Ballstad: about 123 km and 140 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Day 5: Nusfjord and Kvalvika
Rejoin the E10 and cross the Nappstraum tunnel to Flakstadøya. Spend the morning in Nusfjord, where Store norske leksikon says the buildings document the development of the Lofoten fishery almost in full. In the afternoon cross the Fredvang bridges to Innersand or Fredvang school for Kvalvika and Ryten. The path is more gradual than many summit routes in the region, Visit Lofoten says, and it allows 3–5 hours; it suits families with children aged about 10 and over who are used to hiking. Drones are not allowed in Lofotodden National Park. Sleep in Ramberg, about 7 km from Innersand.
Driving Ballstad to Ramberg: about 63 km and 70 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Day 6: Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and Reinebringen
Drive over to Moskenesøya. At Hamnøy, use lay-bys for photographs; Visit Lofoten says passing places marked M are not for stopping. On Sakrisøy, Anitas Sjømat sells the island's own seafood. In Reine, park in the outer harbour for Reinebringen, open from May to September; Visit Lofoten describes a steep path of built steps, and Reinebringen AS advises against bringing small children or dogs and suggests going early or late in the day. If the weather is poor, visit the Lofotodden National Park visitor centre in Reine instead.
Driving Ramberg to Reine: about 26 km and 30 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Day 7: Bunes beach, Sørvågen and Å
Take the morning Reinefjorden boat from Reine to Vindstad and walk the 2.8 km path to Bunes beach in Lofotodden National Park; Visit Lofoten allows 2–4 hours and says there are no shops in Vindstad, so bring food. Check the return sailing before you leave the pier. Back in Reine, drive south past Moskenes to Sørvågen, whose Telecom Museum tells the story of the 1908 radio link to Røst. End at Å, where the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum occupies buildings from the 1800s. Sleep in Å; the Moskenes ferry terminal is about 5 km back along the E10.
Driving Reine to Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, Å: about 9 km and 15 minutes (approximate, OpenStreetMap routing).
Questions
- How far is it from Svolvær to Å?
- About 129 km by road on the OSRM router, which estimates around 2 hours 20 minutes without stops. Measured along the E10 on OpenStreetMap, Svolvær is about 132 km from the road's end at Å. Visit Lofoten gives 163 km for the full E10 from Fiskebøl to Å.
- Can you drive to Trollfjorden?
- No. Visit Lofoten says there is no road into the fjord, so visits are by RIB, sailing boat, charter boat or cruise boat from Svolvær, or on Hurtigruten, which enters the fjord.
- When is the midnight sun on this route?
- Visit Lofoten gives the season as 28 May to 14 July, varying by place, with Eggum from 25 May to 19 July and Bunesstranda from 28 May to 16 July. It notes that mountains block the midnight sun from Svolvær and Leknes, so head for the outer coast. Cloud can hide it on any night.
- Can you camp at Bunes beach?
- Visit Lofoten says camping is permitted, but not near the mountain Helvetestinden because of rock falls, and warns that the area is exposed to north-westerly winds. Drones are not permitted in the national park, and fires can damage the beach vegetation.
- Where is the car park for Reinebringen?
- Visit Lofoten directs drivers to the car park in Reine's outer harbour. From there you walk through Reine towards Reinehalsen and along the old road outside the tunnel to the foot of the steps, about 1.9 km and 30 minutes.
