Lofoten in summer

Summer brings the midnight sun, the warmest and driest months and the busiest roads. Booking ahead and knowing the local parking and camping rules make the trip easier.

Light

The sun stays above the horizon at midnight from late May to mid-July. MET Norway's flat-horizon figures for 2026 run from the night of 25–26 May to 17–18 July in Svolvær and Leknes, and from 26–27 May to 15–16 July in Reine. Weather

  • July is the warmest month in the 1991–2020 normals: 13.3 °C at Svolvær lufthavn and 12.7 °C at Leknes lufthavn.
  • June (43 mm) and July (40 mm) are the driest months at Leknes lufthavn.
  • Visit Lofoten says summer temperatures can range from 8 °C to 30 °C and advises packing light and warm clothes with windproof and waterproof layers.

Crowds and booking

Visit Lofoten describes June to August as high season and recommends booking accommodation ahead. It also recommends pre-booking the Moskenes–Bodø and Lødingen–Bognes ferries in high season. Only part of each Bodø–Moskenes sailing can be reserved; check Torghatten Nord's route page for the current booking rules. July is the main holiday month; there are normally fewer people outside it.

Parking

  • Paid parking is most common in Vågan, Flakstad and Moskenes, and Visit Lofoten suggests the EasyPark app.
  • Signs with an "M" mark passing places on narrow roads, not parking.

Motorhomes

  • Where no sign prohibits it, a motorhome may stay on a turnout beside a public road for up to two nights without causing obstruction, according to camping guidance published by Visit Lofoten. Keep at least 4 m from other vehicles for fire safety.
  • Motorhomes and caravans may not park between 00:00 and 06:00 at listed car parks in Vågan and on Værøy.
  • Statens vegvesen notes that ferry terminals and rest areas are not intended for overnight stays.
  • Empty toilets only at disposal stations.

Tents

  • Tents are allowed in open country at least 150 m from an inhabited house or cabin. Stays longer than two days (48 hours) need the landowner's consent, except in the mountains or far from settlements.
  • Tents are banned from 1 May to 1 October at listed sites in Moskenes, including Reine and Reinebringen, and all year at Haukland.
  • Open fires in or near woodland are not allowed from 15 April to 15 September.

Sleep

Visit Lofoten notes that some visitors struggle to sleep in constant daylight, and suggests a sleep mask or covering the window.
