Lofoten Handbook

Map of Lofoten: where to stay

Lofoten runs as one line of villages along the E10, from Svolvær in the north-east to Å in the south-west. This plots every place to stay in the guide at its own position, so you can see where the accommodation actually is before choosing a base.

Places to stay, plotted

Where the places to stay in Lofoten are955 places to stay plotted at their own coordinates, from Svolvær in the north-east to Å in the south-west. The numbered markers are the 14 destinations, listed beside the map in the order the E10 reaches them.
955 places to stay, each at its own recorded position. The islands appear because the building does — this draws the accommodation, not the coastline, so empty ground and open water look the same. 23 more sit outside this frame and are on their destination's page instead.

How to read it

Each small mark is one place to stay. The numbered discs are the 14 villages this guide is organised around, in the order the E10 reaches them. Where the marks crowd together, that is a village; where the line of them thins to nothing, that is a stretch of road with nowhere to stay on it.

Two things the map does not do. It does not draw the coastline — the islands appear only because people build near the water, so an uninhabited headland and the open sea look identical. And it says nothing about how long anything takes to drive: the road bends around every fjord, so two marks close together can be a long way apart by car.

For what each village is actually like to stay in, read where to stay in Lofoten. For the driving itself, see getting around Lofoten.

Questions

What does this map show?
Every place to stay this guide lists that has a recorded position — 955 of them — drawn at its own coordinates. The shape of the islands comes out of the accommodation itself, because building in Lofoten follows the shore. It is not a topographic map: open water, empty ground and mountain all look the same on it.
How far is it from one end of Lofoten to the other?
Svolvær and Å are about 75 km apart in a straight line. The road between them is longer, because the E10 follows the coast and crosses between islands by bridge and tunnel. Distances on this site are straight-line and labelled as such.
Which part of Lofoten has the most places to stay?
Leknes, with 275 of the 978 places listed here. That is a count, not a recommendation — the busiest part of the chain is not automatically the part that suits your trip.
Why are the villages numbered?
The numbers are the order the E10 reaches each place driving south-west from Svolvær. It is the order most visitors travel in, and it is the order the rest of this site uses.
