Nusfjord

Nusfjord stands on the west side of the short Nusfjorden inlet on the south-east coast of Flakstadøya, in Flakstad. It lies 6.2 km off the E10 on the Fv7596, and the first road to the village was not built until the 1960s. Store norske leksikon recorded 31 residents in 2016.

What is there Most houses date from the 1800s. Store norske leksikon lists 28 preserved rorbuer, together with working buildings such as a fish plant, a cod liver oil works, boathouses and a shop, and says the village documents the development of the Lofoten fishery almost in full. Nusfjord was one of Norway's pilot projects in European Architectural Heritage Year 1975, its buildings are protected, and it remains an active fishing village. Visit Norway records that up to 1,500 men and 500 boats gathered here during the fishery at its peak.

The restored rorbuer are run as Nusfjord Arctic Resort, which also runs a restaurant, a tavern and a café and offers fishing trips, kayaking and guided hikes.

What is nearby A walking route runs between Nesland and Nusfjord. Ramberg, the municipal centre of Flakstad, and Leknes are both reached along the E10.

Who it suits Travellers who want to sleep in a historic fishing village and are content to eat on site or drive for supplies.
