Places to stay, rorbuer, beaches and trip planning for the Lofoten Islands in Norway.
The aurora can appear over Lofoten from late August to mid-April. Seeing it depends on darkness, a clear sky and enough solar activity on the same night.
Northern lightsBest time for the northern lightsWhere to see the northern lightsNorthern lights accommodationFrom late May to mid-July the sun stays above the horizon all night in Lofoten. The dates shift by a few days from place to place.
Midnight sunMidnight sun accommodationAustvågøya
Lofoten's largest town, on Austvågøya in Vågan. Svolvær has an airport nearby, a Hurtigruten call, an express boat to Bodø and the largest choice of accommodation in the islands, with shops and restaurants close at hand. A practical base for the north-east.
Vestvågøya
The administrative centre of Vestvågøy and the trade and service centre for west Lofoten. Leknes has an airport just north of town, hotels, shops and restaurants, and is a practical base between Svolvær and the villages of Flakstad and Moskenesøya.
Flakstadøya
One of the oldest and best-preserved fishing villages in Lofoten, at the end of a side road on Flakstadøya. Most buildings date from the 1800s, and restored rorbuer are let to visitors, with places to eat and activities in the village.
Hamnøya
A small fishing village on an island at the mouth of Reinefjorden, where the E10 crosses a chain of bridges towards Reine. Hamnøy has red rorbuer beside the water and suits travellers who want to stay close to Reine and Reinefjorden.
Moskenesøya
The administrative centre of Moskenes and a working fishing village at the mouth of Reinefjorden. Reine has rorbuer, restaurants, the Lofotodden National Park visitor centre, the Reinebringen trail and boats to Vindstad for Bunes beach.
Moskenesøya
The fishing village at the end of the E10, at the south-west tip of Moskenesøya. Much of Å is preserved as the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, alongside a stockfish museum and modernised rorbuer, making it a base for travellers interested in fishing history.

Cycling in Lofoten mostly means riding the E10 and quieter side roads: Fiskebøl to Å is 160 km of tarmac with no ferries, but few cycle paths and ten tunnels. Until the end of rebuilding, which Statens vegvesen expects in December 2027, the Nappstraumen undersea tunnel on the E10 is closed to cyclists, with transport offered through it.
Henningsvær
A steep, worn summit path from Festvåg to 541 m above Henningsvær and the Vestfjord. Visit Lofoten rates it demanding despite its short length, with loose rock and a short scramble at the top.
Organised sea-fishing trips leave from Svolvær and Ballstad through much of the year, with gear and warm suits supplied. Visit Lofoten says winter, January to April, is the time for the traditional cod fishery, but trips also run in summer.
Svolvær
Svolvær's local mountain, reached by the Sherpa stairway known as Djeveltrappa up to Djevelporten, a boulder wedged in a gorge, and on along an exposed path to Fløya (590 m).
3 days
A three-day winter plan for November to March based in Svolvær: a northern lights tour, a RIB trip into Trollfjorden, SKREI in Kabelvåg, Henningsvær and the Viking museum at Borg, with short daylight drives and no winter summits.
3 days
A three-day loop from Leknes: the Viking museum at Borg and Haukland beach, then the E10 through Nusfjord and Flakstad to Reine and Å, and a morning on Reinebringen or at Bunes beach. Drive times come from OpenStreetMap routing.
5 days
Five days one way along the E10: Svolvær and Fløya, SKREI in Kabelvåg, Henningsvær, Borg and Haukland beach, Nusfjord and Kvalvika, then Reine and Å. Leave on the Moskenes ferry to Bodø or fly home from Leknes.
