The places to stay listed here are recorded as standing at the water's edge. They are not all rorbuer: holiday homes, apartments, cabins, sea houses and hotels are among them too.

What waterfront means here

The flag is set only where a source says the building itself is at the water. A sea view is recorded separately, and many of these record one as well. Anything without the flag is unknown rather than inland, so this is the set the sources confirm, not a complete count of everything on the shore.

Two of the types on the list are shore buildings by definition. A rorbu was built at the shore, often on wooden posts above the water, so fishermen could reach their boats. A sea house, or sjøhus, was a waterfront warehouse built with one wall over deep water so boats could load and unload alongside, used for handling and storing fish.

Where they are

The chain beside the list counts how many are filed under each of the guide's places along the E10, from the current listings.

What they record

Each place's page lists what its sources record: a kitchen or self-catering, whether it suits families, a restaurant on site, a sauna, a hot tub or access to a beach. Some describe northern lights viewing, which is what the operator says about the place rather than anything that can be promised. Check dates on Booking.com.

Questions

What counts as waterfront accommodation in Lofoten?
On this site, a place is marked waterfront only where a source says the building itself stands at the water. A sea view is a separate record, and many waterfront places record one as well. Anything without the flag is unknown rather than inland.
Are waterfront places in Lofoten always rorbuer?
No. Rorbuer are among them, but so are holiday homes, apartments, cabins, sea houses and hotels. The type filter on the list shows each.
What is a sea house?
A sjøhus, or sea house, is a waterfront warehouse built with one wall over deep water so boats could load and unload alongside, and used for handling and storing fish and other goods. Rorbuer were often set above them. Visit Lofoten lists rorbuer and sea houses together as one type of accommodation.
Which Lofoten villages have the most waterfront places to stay?
The chain beside the list counts the waterfront places filed under each of the guide's places along the E10, from the current listings, so it stays right as places are added or removed.
Why were so many Lofoten buildings built over the water?
Because the fishery worked from boats. Rorbuer were built at the shore, often on wooden posts above the water, as a place for fishermen to rest between trips and to store gear, and sea houses were built so boats could load and unload alongside.
