Å

Å is a fishing village on the south-east side of Moskenesøya, facing Vestfjorden, and the outermost settlement on the large islands of Lofoten. It is the end point of the E10, which runs from Luleå in Sweden via Kiruna and Narvik. Together with Tind, a kilometre to the north-east, it had 123 residents in 2016. The name comes from the Old Norse á, river, after the short river that flows through the village from Åvatnet.

What is there Å has a preserved group of buildings from the mid and late 1800s, including a cod liver oil works from 1850, a bakery from 1844 and several rorbuer, and a number of the houses are protected. The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, part of Museum Nord, is set in these buildings and covers life in the fishing village and 250 years of the Lofoten fishery; its buildings include a boathouse, the cod liver oil works, a smithy, a post office, a fisherman's cabin and the bakery. Lofoten Stockfish Museum is also in Å. Visit Lofoten recommends staying in the modernised rorbuer, and the village also has fish processing.

Getting here Lofotekspressen (bus route 300) runs from Narvik and Evenes to Å, and a local route links Å with Reine and Hamnøy. From the Bodø ferry at Moskenes, Visit Lofoten suggests a southbound bus.

Who it suits Travellers interested in the history of the Lofoten fishery, and those who want to stay at the end of the road with the museum on the doorstep.

Things to consider Because the E10 ends here, any onward trip by road heads back north-east past Sørvågen and Reine. Visit Lofoten directs drivers to the car park just after the tunnel, about three minutes' walk from the centre.
