A rorbu in Å is a cabin inside a preserved fishing village. Å has a group of buildings from the mid and late 1800s — a cod liver oil works from 1850, a bakery from 1844 and several rorbuer — and a number of the houses are protected, with the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum set among them. Å Rorbuer, Å-Hamna Rorbuer, Å Feskarbrygga Rorbuer and Ingrid Rorbu stand in the village. Kaikanten Rorbuer is on Røst, an island reached by ferry or plane rather than by road.

What those in the village are like

Å-Hamna lets traditionally furnished cottages and houses of 25–60 m² on the same site as the Lofoten Stockfish Museum. Å Rorbuer is run by Classic Norway Hotels and has a restaurant, a lobby bar and hotel rooms in former fish-processing buildings on the same site. Each listing shows the facilities a source records. Visit Lofoten recommends staying in the modernised rorbuer here, and lists one restaurant in the village along with a summer bakery and a museum café.

Getting there

Å is the end point of the E10, which runs from Luleå in Sweden by way of Kiruna and Narvik. The Moskenes ferry quay for the Bodø car ferry is about 5 km back up the road. Bus 300, the Lofotekspressen, runs Å–Leknes–Svolvær–Narvik; route 742 links Leknes and Å, and route 772 runs Å–Reine–Hamnøy. Leknes Airport is about 66 km.

Who it suits

Travellers interested in the Lofoten fishery who are content with a small village and one restaurant. Sørvågen, 2.5 km back along the E10, has several more places to eat, and Reine is about 9 km up the road. Because the road ends here, any onward drive heads back north-east.
