Do you need a car in Lofoten?

A car is not required, but it changes what a trip can cover. Buses run along the E10 and to several villages, while side roads, beaches and early or late starts are simpler with your own wheels.

What works without a car

Reis Nordland's bus network covers the E10 from Å to Svolvær and on to Narvik and Evenes Airport (route 300), with local routes to Henningsvær (18-743), Ballstad (18-766), Stamsund (18-767) and between Å, Reine and Hamnøy (18-772). Flybussen Lofoten links Evenes Airport with Svolvær. The Bodø–Moskenes ferry is free for foot passengers without a reservation, and the NEX 2 express boat links Bodø and Svolvær.

A base in a village on a bus route, such as Svolvær, Leknes or Reine, keeps the most options open. Visit Lofoten notes that public transport in Lofoten takes some planning and that timetables change between winter and summer.

Where a car helps

  • Distance. Svolvær to Å is about 129 km (approximate, OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, 2026-09-16), and buses run to fixed timetables (Reis Nordland).
  • Side roads. Reis Nordland marks some routes as school routes (skolerute), including 18-771 to Fredvang and Nusfjord.
  • Leknes Airport. Entur lists no bus line at the Leknes airport stop, while Avinor lists four car hire companies at the airport.
  • Flexibility. Visit Lofoten notes that a hire car gives the freedom to stop where the road demands it.

Where a car adds work

  • Winter rules. Nordland requires at least 3 mm of tyre tread from 16 October to 30 April, and winter tyres or chains whenever needed for grip (Statens vegvesen). Visit Lofoten advises allowing extra time in winter.
  • Parking. Visit Lofoten says paid parking is most common in Vågan, Flakstad and Moskenes.
  • Ferry queues. Only part of each Bodø–Moskenes sailing can be reserved; other vehicles queue at the dock.

A middle route

Do foot passengers pay on the Bodø–Moskenes ferry?
Torghatten Nord states that travelling without a vehicle is free unless you book a reserved seat, which is limited to 20 per departure. Passengers without a pre-booked ticket register their details with the QR code at the dock before boarding.
Do you need a car in Lofoten?
Not necessarily. Local buses reach most places along the E10, but Visit Lofoten notes they run infrequently to places off the main road, so day trips need planning. A hire car gives more flexibility for beaches, trailheads and side roads. In winter, Visit Lofoten suggests considering buses rather than driving icy roads straight after a flight.
