Lofoten fly-drive: flight, hotel and car hire
A fly-drive to Lofoten means flying to one of four airports, collecting a hire car there and driving the E10 between places to stay. Which airport to use depends on the end of the islands you are staying at: Leknes or the Bodø car ferry for Reine and the west, Svolvær or Evenes for Svolvær and Henningsvær.
How a fly-drive works here
There are two ways to put one together:
- Book each part yourself: a flight to the airport that suits where you are staying, a place to stay, and a hire car collected at that airport. Links for each part are below.
- Book flight and hotel together as a package, then add the car. Expedia's package form combines a flight with a stay and offers a car as an extra.
Either way, the airport decides the first and last drive of the trip, so choose it by where you are staying.
Which airport for which part of Lofoten
| Staying in | Airport to fly into | The drive |
|---|---|---|
| Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Sørvågen, Å, Ramberg, Fredvang, Nusfjord | Leknes (LKN), or Bodø (BOO) and the car ferry to Moskenes | Leknes Airport is about 58 km by road from Reine; Moskenes ferry quay is about 5 km from Reine |
| Leknes, Ballstad, Stamsund | Leknes (LKN) | Leknes Airport is about 1.6 km from Leknes centre |
| Svolvær, Kabelvåg, Henningsvær | Svolvær (SVJ), or Harstad/Narvik at Evenes (EVE) | Svolvær Airport is about 6 km from Svolvær centre; Evenes is about 166 km by road from Svolvær |
Road distances are approximate (OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, 16 September 2026). Visit Lofoten gives the drive from Evenes to Svolvær as around two and a half hours, longer in winter.
Leknes and Svolvær are on the islands themselves. Avinor lists Widerøe as the airline at both, with connections mainly through Bodø.
Evenes is on the mainland side and has more airlines. Visit Lofoten lists nonstop flights to Evenes from several European airports, some of them seasonal, and daily Norwegian flights from Oslo to both Evenes and Bodø all year.
Bodø means crossing on the Torghatten Nord car ferry to Moskenes. Torghatten says half of each sailing's capacity can be booked in advance; the rest is loaded from the queue at the dock.
Why a car matters in Lofoten
- Distance. Svolvær to Å is about 129 km by road, and the buses run to fixed timetables (Reis Nordland).
- Side roads. Reis Nordland marks some routes as school routes, including the one to Fredvang and Nusfjord.
- Leknes Airport. Entur's journey planner listed no bus line at the Leknes airport stop when checked on 16 September 2026.
A car is not the only way to see Lofoten. Do you need a car in Lofoten? covers the bus routes and the bases that work without one.
Car hire desks at each airport
Avinor, which runs all four airports, lists these car hire companies (checked 25 September 2026):
| Airport | Companies listed by Avinor |
|---|---|
| Leknes (LKN) | Avis, Hertz, Europcar, SIXT |
| Svolvær (SVJ) | Avis, Hertz, Europcar, SIXT |
| Harstad/Narvik, Evenes (EVE) | Avis, Hertz, Budget, SIXT, Enterprise |
| Bodø (BOO) | Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar, SIXT, Enterprise, Alamo, National |
Before booking, check the hire terms for one-way hire and for taking the car on a ferry.
By season
- Winter. In Nordland, tyres need at least 3 mm of tread from 16 October to 30 April, and studded tyres are allowed in the same period (Statens vegvesen). Sections of the E10 have closed for snowdrift and avalanches, and the Gimsøy bridge can close in strong wind. Visit Lofoten advises building slack into the schedule, as weather can delay flights and ferries. See Lofoten in winter.
- Summer. Daylight is not a constraint: see the midnight sun for the dates. The Bodø–Moskenes ferry queue is the thing to plan around if you arrive by car from Bodø.
Before you book
- Match the airport to where you are staying, using the table above.
- Check that the hire company has a desk at that airport (the list above) and whether it allows one-way hire or ferry crossings.
- For a winter trip, confirm the car comes with winter tyres.
- Book the stay for the nights you land and leave, so the first and last drives are short.

Questions
- How does a fly-drive to Lofoten work?
- You fly to an airport that suits where you are staying, collect a hire car there and drive the E10 between places to stay. The flight, the stay and the car can be booked separately, or the flight and stay booked together as a package with the car added.
- Which airport should I fly into for a Lofoten fly-drive?
- For Reine and the west, Leknes (LKN) is about 58 km by road from Reine, or fly to Bodø and take the car ferry to Moskenes, about 5 km from Reine. For Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær, Svolvær (SVJ) is about 6 km from Svolvær centre; Harstad/Narvik at Evenes (EVE) has more airlines and is about 166 km by road from Svolvær (approximate, OSRM on OpenStreetMap data).
- Can I hire a car at Leknes or Svolvær airport?
- Yes. Avinor lists Avis, Hertz, Europcar and SIXT at both Leknes and Svolvær airports (checked 25 September 2026). Evenes and Bodø have more companies.
- Can I take a hire car on the Bodø–Moskenes ferry?
- The ferry carries cars, and Torghatten Nord says half of each sailing's capacity can be booked in advance, with the rest loaded from the queue. Whether a hire car may go on a ferry is set by the hire company, so check the rental terms before booking.
- Do I need winter tyres on a winter fly-drive?
- In Nordland, Statens vegvesen requires at least 3 mm of tread from 16 October to 30 April, and studded tyres are allowed in the same period. Winter tyres or chains are needed whenever conditions require them for grip. Confirm with the hire company that the car has winter tyres.
- Can I book flight, hotel and car hire together for Lofoten?
- Expedia's package form combines a flight with a stay and offers a car as an extra. Booking each part separately lets you choose the airport and car hire desk for where you are staying.
