How many days do you need in Lofoten?

Visit Lofoten's sample road trip covers three nights and notes there are good reasons to stay longer. Beyond that, travel days, the distance along the E10 and how often you want to change base decide most of it, and those can be measured.

Start with the journey in and out

Getting to Lofoten takes time at both ends. The direct Bodø–Moskenes ferry took 3 h 15 min on the scheduled sailings sampled in September 2026 (Entur; Visit Lofoten says about 3.5 hours). The drive from Evenes to Svolvær is about 166 km (OSRM), which Visit Lofoten says takes around two and a half hours, longer in winter. Flybussen gives about three hours from Evenes to Svolvær. Flights into Leknes and Svolvær connect mainly through Bodø. Count the arrival and departure days before planning anything else.

Then the length of the islands

The E10 runs from the Lofast connection to Å. Visit Lofoten gives 163 km from Fiskebøl to Å. Approximate road distances between the main bases (OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, 2026-09-16):

One base or two

Arriving by ferry at Moskenes and leaving from Evenes, or the reverse, crosses the full length of the islands. Visit Lofoten's sample road trip starts with the Bodø–Moskenes ferry, moves east via Henningsvær to Svolvær, and leaves via Lødingen. It spans four days and three nights, and adds that "there are many good reasons to spend more than 3 nights in Lofoten".

  • One base suits a shorter stay or a trip without a car. Choose a village on a main bus route.
  • Two bases, one in the west around Reine and one in the east around Svolvær or Henningsvær, cut repeat driving on a longer trip.

Build in slack

  • Timetables change with the season for buses and boats (Visit Lofoten).
  • Ferry space is limited. Only part of each Bodø–Moskenes sailing can be reserved, and full sailings leave vehicles queuing for the next one (Torghatten Nord).
  • Some trips need a boat. The Reinefjorden boat to Vindstad runs to a timetable.
  • Winter tyre rules apply. Nordland requires at least 3 mm of tread from 16 October to 30 April, and winter tyres or chains whenever needed for grip (Statens vegvesen).
