Cycling in Lofoten

Side roads such as the 'midnight sun road' from Fiskebøl to Laukvik and the Valberg road to Stamsund carry little traffic, and Visit Lofoten notes that riding west and north at night in summer can be done under the midnight sun.

Visit Lofoten's suggested stages: Fiskebøl–Laukvik–Vestpollen–Svolvær (68 km, the last part on the E10); Svolvær–Stamsund (66 km, via the cycle road to Ørsnes, Gimsøya and county road 815 on the Valberg road); Stamsund–Ballstad (via the Hagskaret pass or via Steine, Sennesvika and Mortsund, then Leknes and road 818). Reine Rorbuer notes there is no cycle path in western Lofoten, so riding there is on the E10.

Visit Lofoten suggests riding before or after July to avoid the busiest summer traffic, and using side roads and avoiding rush hours.

Stage distances from Visit Lofoten: 68 km (Fiskebøl–Svolvær), 66 km (Svolvær–Stamsund); 160 km Fiskebøl–Å in total.

Roads vary from two lanes to single lane or narrower, with most riding on the main road (Visit Lofoten). Tunnels total 7.5 km.

• Reine Rorbuer (bike rental): Regular and e-bikes for all-day rental 10:00–20:00; children's bikes on request; listed NOK 450; recommends a ride to Å.
• Fly & Bike Leknes – Lofoten Gaver & Brukskunst: Bike rental with helmet and safety vest, delivery confirmed on arrival and departure (email post@gave.no); no website given in the listing.

• Bring rain and windproof clothing, a reflective vest, a helmet, good lights and a first aid kit (Visit Lofoten). The Leknes rental firm recommends a safety vest and bike lamp in all tunnels.
• Rentals are also listed by Visit Lofoten at Retur on Svolvær square and at Røst Bryggehotell; its Svolvær–Stamsund stage names Lofoten Rorbuer AS in Svolvær and bike service at Sport1.
• From Stamsund, Hurtigruten and Havila port-to-port tickets back to Svolvær run after 19:00 from NOK 88, taking about 1 hour 50 minutes (Visit Lofoten).
• The ferry that used to link Ballstad and Nusfjord no longer runs (Visit Lofoten).

Rules and closures

• Nappstraumen tunnel (E10; Visit Lofoten gives it as a subsea tunnel 1,780 m long): during rehabilitation, with the construction period ending in December 2027, cyclists and pedestrians are excluded even from the reduced-speed free passage allowed for other traffic from 15 July to 15 August (Statens vegvesen). Cyclists and pedestrians in smaller unorganised groups are picked up in a suitable vehicle and taken through; larger organised groups must arrange their own transport. Motor traffic follows a lead vehicle; the tunnel is closed overnight 23:00–06:00 with a single passage (moved to 02:00 from 15 May 2026).
• Visit Lofoten's cycling page says the Nappstraumen tunnel is closed to cyclists in 2026 and advises checking vegvesen.no.
• Lofoten Code of Conduct: drivers should keep well clear of cyclists, especially in tunnels.
• Cycling is not allowed on the Torsfjorden–Kvalvika or Bunesfjorden–Bunessanden trails in Lofotodden National Park (Visit Lofoten).
