Lofoten in 5 days: Svolvær to Reine along the E10

Five days one way along the E10: Svolvær and Fløya, SKREI in Kabelvåg, Henningsvær, Borg and Haukland beach, Nusfjord and Kvalvika, then Reine and Å. Leave on the Moskenes ferry to Bodø or fly home from Leknes.

This plan runs one way along the E10, from Svolvær in the north-east to Reine and Å in the south-west. It suits travellers who fly into Svolvær or arrive on Hurtigruten, and who leave either on the Bodø ferry from Moskenes, which took 3 h 15 min on the direct scheduled sailings sampled in September 2026 (Entur; Visit Lofoten says about 3.5 hours), or by air from Leknes.

Each day pairs one longer outing with a drive of roughly 5 to 95 km, measured with the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data. Router times leave out stops and roadworks. On day four the E10 passes through the Nappstraum tunnel, which since August 2026 has been closed at night apart from a 02:00 passage; Statens vegvesen expects the upgrade to finish in December 2027.

The walks have seasons set by Visit Lofoten: Fløya in spring, summer and autumn; Festvågtinden from May to December, snow permitting; Kvalvika and Ryten in spring, summer and autumn; Mannen and Reinebringen from May to September. Each day names an indoor or lower alternative for when a path is out of season or the weather turns. Museum and gallery hours change through the year, so check them before setting out. For November to March, the winter five-day plan is the better fit.

Where to stay on this route

Svolvær has the airport, the Hurtigruten quay and, according to Visit Lofoten, the largest selection of accommodation in Lofoten, so it suits the first night. Henningsvær has hotels, rorbuer and restaurants within walking distance, but Visit Lofoten describes the access road as narrow and busy in summer and parking as difficult, so check whether your accommodation has parking. Leknes is the service town for west Lofoten, with hotels and shops; Ballstad, off the Fv818, offers rorbuer by a working harbour instead. Reine suits the last two nights, with the Reinebringen path and the Vindstad boat on the doorstep. For an early ferry, Moskenes and Sørvågen are both within a few kilometres of the terminal.

Day by day

  1. Arrive in Svolvær: the town and Fløya

    Svolvær Airport, Helle, is about 6 km east of the town, and Hurtigruten ships dock in the centre. Spend the first afternoon on foot. In spring, summer and autumn the Fløya path leaves from a car park by Blåtindveien, near the centre, and climbs a Sherpa staircase to Djevelporten, a boulder wedged in a gorge. Visit Lofoten rates the stairs easy, the section to Djevelporten medium and the summit demanding, and allows about 2 hours each way to the top. In poor weather, the Lofoten War Memorial Museum is between the Kulturhus and the Hurtigruten pier, and Magic Ice's ice gallery is on the quay at Fiskergata 36.

  2. SKREI at Kabelvåg, Festvågtinden and Henningsvær

    Drive about 5 km along the E10 to Storvågan by Kabelvåg, where SKREI groups the Lofoten Museum, the Lofoten Aquarium and the Espolin Gallery. The museum's manor house, completed in 1815, stands on the site of the medieval town of Vágar. Continue onto the Fv816 towards Henningsvær and stop at the Festvåg car park. Festvågtinden (541 m) is 1.3 km each way, 60–90 minutes up, steep and with loose rock; the lake Heiavannet viewpoint part-way up is a shorter walk. Finish in Henningsvær. Visit Lofoten describes parking in the village as difficult and suggests using the larger car parks and walking in.

  3. Gimsøya, Borg and Haukland beach

    Rejoin the E10 and cross Gimsøystraumen, a rest area on the Norwegian Scenic Route, to Gimsøya, then detour to Hov on the island's northern edge, where Hov Gård runs horse riding. Continue to Vestvågøya and the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg, which Visit Lofoten places on the E10 14 km north of Leknes. In the afternoon take the side road to Haukland beach. From May to September the Mannen path starts at the beach car park: about 2 km one way and 2–3 hours return, with exposed parts; Visit Lofoten does not recommend it for small children. Uttakleiv beach is a short drive beyond. Sleep in Leknes.

  4. Nusfjord and Kvalvika, then on to Reine

    Drive through the Nappstraum tunnel to Flakstadøya and the side road to Nusfjord, one of the best-preserved fishing villages in Lofoten, whose houses mostly date from the 1800s. Continue past Ramberg and over the Fredvang bridges to the Kvalvika and Ryten car parks at Fredvang school or Innersand, both paid. Visit Lofoten allows 3–5 hours for the beach and the 543 m top. From 22 June to 30 September 2026 the national park is rebuilding the path and closes it fully on helicopter days, announced a few days ahead. If it is closed, walk Rambergstranda instead. Drive on to Reine.

  5. Reinebringen or Bunes beach, and Å

    If Reinebringen is open, start early: the path leaves from the car park in Reine's outer harbour, and Reinebringen AS gives 5.8 km for the round trip from there and suggests early morning or late evening to avoid crowds. It warns that wind over 10 m/s makes the hike dangerous. From April to October the Reinefjorden boat to Vindstad and the 2.8 km path to Bunes beach are the alternative. Later, drive about 9 km to Å for the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum; Visit Lofoten lists its bakery as open from 1 June to 30 September. The Moskenes ferry terminal is about 5 km from Reine, and Leknes Airport about 58 km.

Questions

Can this route be driven the other way, from Moskenes to Svolvær?
Yes. The E10 is the single main road through the islands, as Visit Lofoten puts it, so the order of the days can be reversed. Starting from the Bodø–Moskenes ferry and finishing in Svolvær suits travellers arriving by sea and flying home from Svolvær; the Lofoten road trip plan follows that direction.
How long is the ferry from Moskenes to Bodø?
The direct crossing took 3 h 15 min on the scheduled sailings sampled in September 2026 (Entur); Visit Lofoten says about 3.5 hours. Torghatten Nord lets travellers reserve part of each sailing's capacity for a fee, asks those with reservations to be at the quay 45 minutes before departure, and warns that the route is very busy in peak season. Foot passengers without a reservation travel free.
Are Festvågtinden and Mannen suitable for children?
Visit Lofoten describes Festvågtinden as steep, with loose stones, airy sections and some easy climbing, and suggests a guide for people not used to that terrain. It says Mannen suits older children used to steep ground who are not afraid of heights, and does not recommend it for small children.
Where do you park for Kvalvika and Ryten?
Visit Lofoten recommends the car park at Fredvang school or the one at Innersand, signed after the Fredvang bridges. The national park says both charge. Parking in passing places or ditches can lead to a fine.
Can you follow this plan by bus?
Partly. Lofotekspressen (route 300, Å–Leknes–Svolvær–Narvik) calls at Evenes Airport on the way, and local routes link Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær (18-743) and Å, Reine and Hamnøy (18-772); Visit Lofoten recommends the Reis app for timetables. Side trips are harder: Nusfjord Village & Resort says its nearest regular bus stop, Nusfjord Kryss, is 6 km from the village.
