A steep, worn summit path from Festvåg to 541 m above Henningsvær and the Vestfjord. Visit Lofoten rates it demanding despite its short length, with loose rock and a short scramble at the top.

Trail

Why do it

The summit sits directly above Henningsvær, and Visit Lofoten names it as a place to watch the midnight sun. Lake Heiavannet on the way up has a viewpoint over Henningsvær for a shorter outing.

Where

Park in the fee-paying car park beside the buildings at Festvåg, or at Engøya about 1 km towards Henningsvær. The path starts by the ruins of the old reservoir at the head of the bay. Avoid the far-left path, which leads to the Festvågveggen climbing routes rather than the summit.

Best time

May–December depending on snow; peak season is summer and early autumn (Visit Lofoten). Not generally recommended in winter because it is extremely steep.

Who it suits

For people comfortable in steep terrain; Visit Lofoten recommends a guide for those not used to hikes of this difficulty. Parts are airy and need easy climbing. Dogs are possible if used to steep ground, but Visit Lofoten says other hikes suit dog owners better.

Practical information

  • Visit Lofoten says more than 28,000 people hiked Festvågtinden in 2021.
  • Heiavannet, a former drinking-water source, is used for swimming (Visit Lofoten).
  • In snow or ice, Visit Lofoten recommends good footwear and crampons, and generally advises against a winter ascent.

Rules and closures

  • Visit Lofoten warns of significant loose rock on the mountainside because of ongoing erosion; watch for people above and below.
  • Stay on the established path to limit erosion (Visit Lofoten).
