Lofoten in 5 days in winter: Svolvær to Reine by daylight

Five winter days from Svolvær to Reine: northern lights tours at each end, a RIB trip into Trollfjorden, SKREI, Henningsvær, Borg, Nusfjord and Å. Drives are kept to daylight hours and summit hikes are left out.

This winter plan follows the same E10 line as the five-day year-round itinerary but is built around short days and the dark. MET Norway's figures for 15 February 2027 give Svolvær sunrise at 08:22 and sunset at 16:10, while around midwinter the sun does not rise at all: at Svolvær from 7 December to 5 January, and at Reine from 10 December to 2 January.

It has four bases — Svolvær, Henningsvær, Leknes and Reine — and no drive longer than about 70 km on the OSRM router. Summit hikes give way to museums, a RIB trip into Trollfjorden and two northern lights tours, from Svolvær and from Reine. Reinebringen is closed in winter, and Visit Lofoten advises visitors without winter mountain and avalanche experience to use a qualified local guide.

Visit Lofoten's winter advice shapes the plan: keep drives to the middle of the day in December and January, leave slack for storms that delay flights and ferries or close exposed roads such as the Gimsøy bridge, and take a qualified guide into the mountains. Daytime temperatures usually sit between about −5°C and 5°C, it says, with wind and rapid changes. Off-season opening hours are shorter and some places close, so check each museum before you go.

From January to April the skrei, the Arctic cod, comes to spawn, and Visit Lofoten notes cod drying on racks along the shore. Day four crosses the Nappstraum tunnel, closed at night apart from a 02:00 passage.

Where to stay on this route

In winter it pays to stay where the evening activity starts. Svolvær is the meeting point for several northern lights tours and the winter Trollfjorden RIB. Henningsvær keeps you close to SKREI without a second long drive, and Leknes puts the northern-coast beaches at Uttakleiv and Haukland within a short drive for watching the sky. Reine suits the last two nights, as Reine Rorbuer runs its northern lights photography tour from there and Å is about 9 km away. Visit Lofoten calls the rorbu the classic winter option and says the best cabins book up early, especially around the cod fishing championship in March.

Day by day

  1. Svolvær and a northern lights tour

    Arrive at Svolvær Airport, Helle, or take Lofotekspressen from Evenes, which Visit Lofoten recommends in winter over driving straight from the airport. Walk the centre while it is light; Magic Ice's indoor ice gallery on the quay is an option once it is dark, with winter opening hours that differ from summer. In the evening, a guided northern lights tour gives local guides the chance to look for clear sky: Lofoten Aktiv's four-hour tour meets at the tourist information. Tours can be cancelled by weather, and a sighting cannot be promised.

  2. Trollfjorden, SKREI and Henningsvær

    Start with RIB Lofoten's winter trip to Trollfjorden from Torget, about 2 hours in a warm flotation suit, timed for the middle of the day. Then drive to Storvågan by Kabelvåg for SKREI, where the Lofoten Museum tells the story of the fishery; Visit Lofoten points visitors there for the background to the cod fishing season. Check the aquarium and gallery before going, as their listings show winter closures. Continue on the Fv816 to Henningsvær for the night. Visit Lofoten describes a pre-Christmas event there from November, and Kabelvåg's Skårungen holds a Christmas market over four weekends.

  3. Borg and the Haukland and Uttakleiv beaches

    Drive west on the E10 over Gimsøya in daylight, allowing for wind closures at the Gimsøy bridge. At Borg, the Lofotr Viking Museum stays open through the winter, according to Visit Lofoten; it is built around a reconstructed 83 m longhouse. Continue to Leknes and check in. After dark, if the forecast is clear, drive the short distance to Uttakleiv, which Visit Lofoten recommends for low to moderate aurora activity because of its open northern horizon, or to Haukland, which faces west. Keep to ploughed roads and stop only in lay-bys or car parks.

  4. Nusfjord and Flakstad to Reine

    Cross the Nappstraum tunnel after 06:00, when daytime convoys begin, and take the side road to Nusfjord, one of the oldest fishing settlements still lived in, as Visit Lofoten puts it. Back on the E10, stop at Rambergstranda, a rest area on the Norwegian Scenic Route, and continue to Moskenesøya over the bridges at Hamnøy. In the skrei season, from January to April, look for cod hanging on the wooden racks along the shore; Visit Lofoten reminds visitors that the racks, harbours and boats are someone's livelihood. Arrive in Reine before dark.

  5. Å and Sørvågen; northern lights from Reine

    Drive about 9 km south to Å, at the end of the E10. Visit Lofoten says the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum is open year-round with varying hours, so confirm times with Museum Nord first. Stop at Sørvågen on the way back, where Visit Lofoten lists the Telecom Museum. In the evening, Reine Rorbuer runs a northern lights photography tour of about 4 hours for up to 8 people, choosing a location by the weather and aurora forecast. Leave the next day on the Bodø ferry from Moskenes, which runs a winter timetable from 7 September 2026, or drive about 58 km to Leknes Airport.

Questions

How much daylight is there in Lofoten in winter?
It depends on the date. MET Norway's calculation for Svolvær, which assumes a flat horizon, has sunrise at 09:17 and sunset at 14:13 on 15 November 2026, 10:42 and 13:40 on 15 January 2027, and 06:24 and 17:59 on 15 March 2027. The sun does not rise at Svolvær from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, or at Reine from 10 December 2026 to 2 January 2027. Mountains shorten direct sunlight further in many villages. Visit Lofoten says the sky still brightens for a few hours around midday during this period.
Are the northern lights guaranteed on a Lofoten winter trip?
They are possible from late August to mid-April, when nights are dark enough, but they need a clear sky and some solar activity, so no night is certain. Visit Lofoten suggests allowing several nights, getting away from village lights and watching the forecast, and says guides improve the odds because they chase clear patches of sky.
Is it safe to drive in Lofoten in winter?
Visit Lofoten calls it manageable with care: the E10 can be dry, icy, snow-packed or slushy on the same day, exposed points such as the Gimsøy bridge can close in strong winds, and there is no quick detour when the road closes. It advises low speeds, long following distances, checking forecasts and stopping only in lay-bys.
Do I need winter tyres?
In Nordland, Statens vegvesen allows studded tyres from 16 October to 30 April and requires a tread depth of at least 3 mm over the same period, and winter tyres or chains whenever needed for grip. Visit Lofoten says rental cars come with winter tyres, often studded. It also advises checking road and weather forecasts, keeping speed low and not driving on unploughed roads.
When is the cod fishing season in Lofoten?
Visit Lofoten says the skrei (Arctic cod) migrates to the inner coast of Lofoten to spawn from January to April, and that the World Championship in Cod Fishing takes place in March. Store norske leksikon dates the fishery's main season to February–April.
