Lofoten in 3 days: Leknes, the outer beaches, Reine and Å

A three-day loop from Leknes: the Viking museum at Borg and Haukland beach, then the E10 through Nusfjord and Flakstad to Reine and Å, and a morning on Reinebringen or at Bunes beach. Drive times come from OpenStreetMap routing.

This three-day plan starts and finishes at Leknes, whose airport Store norske leksikon names as the nearest to Moskenes municipality, and covers the western half of Lofoten: Vestvågøya, Flakstadøya and Moskenesøya. Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær in the north-east are left for a longer trip; the five-day and seven-day plans include them.

Day one stays near Leknes, with the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg and the beaches at Haukland and Uttakleiv. Day two follows the E10 south-west past Nusfjord and the Flakstad beaches to Å, where the E10 ends, and back to Reine for the night. Day three is for Reine and Reinefjorden before the drive back to Leknes.

Driving figures come from the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data. They exclude stops, roadworks and weather, so treat them as a minimum. The Nappstraum tunnel on the E10 between Vestvågøya and Flakstadøya is being upgraded; since August 2026 it has closed at night apart from a 02:00 passage.

The walks are seasonal. Visit Lofoten gives May to September for Reinebringen and Mannen and April to October for the Bunes trail, and Moskenes municipality closed the Reinebringen steps from November 2025 to May 2026. For a snow-season version, use the winter three-day plan.

Where to stay on this route

Leknes suits the first and last nights: Store norske leksikon puts the airport about 2 km north of the town, and Visit Lofoten lists hotels, shopping centres and restaurants. Ballstad, about 11 km from Leknes by road, is the nearby choice for a rorbu beside a working harbour. For the night in the west, Reine has rorbuer, restaurants, a petrol station and the boat to Vindstad. Hamnøy and Sakrisøy are within about 5 km of Reine and Sørvågen within about 7 km, and Visit Lofoten names Reine, Hamnøy and Sørvågen as places to stay for the Reinebringen hike.

Day by day

  1. Arrive at Leknes: Borg, Haukland and Uttakleiv

    Leknes Airport is about 2 km north of the town, and Avinor lists Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Sixt for car hire there. Drive north on the E10 to the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg, built around a reconstruction of an 83-metre chieftain's longhouse; the museum publishes its own opening hours. Then take the side road to Haukland beach, a rest area on the Norwegian Scenic Route. From May to September the Mannen path starts at the Haukland car park: about 2 km one way and 2–3 hours return, with exposed sections. Carry on through to Uttakleiv beach before returning to Leknes for the night.

  2. Leknes to Å and Reine via Nusfjord and Flakstad

    Head south-west on the E10 through the Nappstraum tunnel to Flakstadøya, then take the 6 km side road to Nusfjord, one of the oldest and best-preserved fishing villages in Lofoten, where Store norske leksikon lists 28 preserved rorbuer. Back on the E10, stop at Skagsanden beach before crossing to Moskenesøya. After Hamnøy the road crosses bridges at the mouth of Reinefjorden. Drive on to Å, the end of the E10, for the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum; Visit Lofoten says it opens year-round with hours that vary, and that parking is just after the tunnel. Visit Lofoten asks drivers not to stop on the road for photographs and to use lay-bys. Return about 9 km to Reine for the night.

  3. Reinebringen or Bunes beach, then back to Leknes

    Pick one outing for the morning. The Reinebringen path climbs Sherpa-built steps to 484 m; Visit Lofoten gives 1–2 hours and a season of May to September, and strongly advises against it in winter. Or take the Reinefjorden boat (Reis Nordland route 18-773) to Vindstad and walk 2.8 km each way to Bunes beach, which Visit Lofoten describes as an easy path; check the return sailing first, as there is no road out. In the afternoon drive north on the E10 and detour over the Fredvang bridges, where the Kvalvika path begins at Innersand, before continuing to Leknes for the night or a flight.

Questions

How much driving does a three-day Lofoten trip involve?
On this plan, about 41 km on day one, 88 km on day two and 65 km on day three, according to the OSRM router, which does not count stops. For scale, the same router puts Svolvær to Å at about 129 km and 2 hours 20 minutes without stops, so adding the north-east villages would add a long driving day.
Which airport is closest to Reine?
Store norske leksikon names Leknes Airport as the nearest airport for Moskenes municipality, where Reine is the administrative centre. The OSRM router gives about 58 km and just over an hour by car from Reine to the airport.
Is Reinebringen open all year?
No. Visit Lofoten gives the season as May to September and strongly advises against the hike in winter, and Reinebringen AS warns of avalanche risk and icy steps. Moskenes municipality closed the steps in November 2025 and removed the chain in early May 2026.
How do you get to Bunes beach?
By boat and on foot. The Reinefjorden boat runs from Reine to Vindstad, and from the pier the path to the beach is 2.8 km each way. Visit Lofoten gives 2–4 hours for the round walk, a season of April to October, and asks you to check the return sailing. Cars cannot reach the beach.
Do roadworks affect the drive between Leknes and Reine?
Yes, on the stretch between Leknes and Flakstadøya. Statens vegvesen is upgrading the Nappstraum tunnel on the E10 and expects to open it for normal traffic in December 2027. Since 17 August 2026 it has been closed at night from 23:00 to 06:00 apart from one passage at 02:00, with pilot-car convoys during the day, according to Lofot-Tidende. Allow extra time and do not plan to cross late at night.
