Where to see the midnight sun in Lofoten

At midnight the sun sits low in the north, so the best places face open sea to the north. Svolvær, on the southern side of mountains, is shaded.

Face north

At midnight the sun is in the northern sky and less than 2° above the horizon, by MET Norway's calculation. Visit Lofoten recommends the outer, northern side of the islands or a mountain top, and explains that Svolvær lies south of high mountains that block the sun.

Visit Lofoten notes the dates can shift by a day between years, and it does not state how they were calculated. They are close to, but not identical with, MET Norway's flat-horizon figures.

Getting there

  • Eggum is at the end of the road, and Visit Lofoten describes the beaches of Flakstadøya and Vestvågøy as easy to reach from the road.
  • The beaches in Lofotodden National Park, including Kvalvika and Bunes, require hiking.
  • Laukvik and Hov are 20–30 minutes by car from Svolvær, according to Visit Lofoten.
  • Visit Lofoten says the midnight sun can be seen from most mountain tops, and names Hoven, Himmeltinden and Reinebringen among the hikes.

Local rules for a night out

  • Tents are banned from 1 May to 1 October at listed sites in Moskenes, including Reine, Reinebringen, Sørvågvatnet and Vindstad.
  • Tents are banned all year at Haukland.
  • Motorhomes and caravans may not park between 00:00 and 06:00 at listed car parks in Vågan and on Værøy.
  • Open fires in or near woodland are not allowed from 15 April to 15 September.
  • Drones are prohibited in Lofotodden National Park.

Where is the best place to see the midnight sun in Lofoten?
Places facing open sea to the north. Visit Lofoten names Laukvik, Hov, Eggum and Uttakleiv, and lists further spots including Unstad, Skagsanden, Kvalvika and Bunes beach, with dates for each.
Can you see the midnight sun from Reine?
Visit Lofoten does not list Reine village as a viewpoint. It names the Reinebringen hike on Moskenesøya, and Bunes beach, reached by the small ferry from Reine to Vindstad and a walk. Tents are banned at Reinebringen from 1 May to 1 October.
Can you camp out to watch the midnight sun?
In many places, yes, at least 150 m from houses and cabins. Tents are banned from 1 May to 1 October at listed sites in Vågan and Moskenes, including Reine, Reinebringen and Vindstad, and all year at Haukland.
Which midnight sun spots can be reached without hiking?
