Best time to see the midnight sun in Lofoten

The midnight sun lasts from late May to mid-July, a little longer in the east than the west. Around the June solstice the sun is at its highest at midnight.

The window

By MET Norway's 2026 calculation for a flat horizon, the sun stays above the horizon at midnight from the night of 25–26 May to the night of 17–18 July in Svolvær and Leknes, and from 26–27 May to 15–16 July in Reine. Visit Lofoten gives 28 May to 14 July for Lofoten as a whole.

The middle weeks leave the most margin

At the start and end of the period the sun only just clears the horizon at midnight. Around the summer solstice it is highest: on 21 June 2026 the centre of the sun is about 1.7° above the horizon at midnight in Svolvær, 1.6° in Leknes and 1.4° in Reine. These are small angles, so a low headland or cloud on the northern horizon can still hide it, and the middle of June gives the most room for error.

Individual viewpoints have their own dates

Visit Lofoten lists dates for named viewpoints, from 24 May to 20 July at Laukvik, north of Svolvær, to 30 May to 14 July on Røst, far out to the south-west. In its list, the places further south-west have shorter seasons. See where to see the midnight sun.

Weather and temperature

In the 1991–2020 normals, June and July are the driest months at Leknes lufthavn, with 43 mm and 40 mm, and July is the warmest, with a mean of 12.7 °C. Visit Lofoten says summer temperatures can range from 8 °C to 30 °C and advises packing light and warm clothes with windproof and waterproof layers, which suits a late-night walk.

Crowds and booking

  • Visit Lofoten describes June to August as high season and recommends booking accommodation ahead.
  • It notes there are normally fewer people outside the main holiday period, which is mainly July.
  • It recommends pre-booking the Bodø–Moskenes ferry in high season. Only part of each sailing can be reserved; check Torghatten Nord's route page for the current booking rules.

Late May and early June fall inside the midnight sun period but before July, the main holiday month. Late June brings the highest midnight sun.

If the sky is overcast

The period lasts several weeks, so a stay of several nights gives more than one chance at a clear midnight.
