Northern lights tours in Lofoten

Lofoten sits under the auroral oval, so the northern lights can show whenever the sky is both dark and clear. Visit Lofoten gives the viewing season as late August to mid-April; from mid-April to late August the nights are too light for the aurora to be seen.

Visit Lofoten's topic page says displays usually appear between 21:00 and 01:00; its how-to guide says that under average conditions they first appear around 20:00–21:00 and fade a little after midnight, and that the long nights of November and December do not necessarily mean more hours of visible aurora. Visit Lofoten's winter page words the end of the season as early April.

Where

Anywhere away from artificial light, with an open view north for weaker displays. Visit Lofoten's guide uses Uttakleiv beach as an example: good for low to moderate activity because it faces north, but as activity rises the aurora spreads east and west and can drop behind Uttakleiv's mountains, when Haukland or Vik beaches (which look west and south-west) work better. Viewing from villages is possible; darker spots give a stronger impression.

Practical information

  • Three things are needed: a dark sky, a clear sky and a location far enough north; solar activity then decides how strong the display is (Visit Lofoten).
  • Visit Lofoten points to the NorwayLights app from Visit Norway for aurora forecasts; its hiking and safety pages recommend the Yr app for weather.
  • No operator can promise a sighting; listings state that tours may be cancelled in poor weather, with refunds.
  • Camera starting point from Visit Lofoten's photography guide: wide lens (14–24 mm), f/2.8 or faster, tripod, manual mode, manual focus set at infinity, and ISO 3200, f/2.8, 8 seconds as a first exposure; carry spare batteries because cold shortens battery life.
  • On beaches, keep bags well above the tide line; the same guide suggests mid to low, outgoing tide for the most wet sand and reflections.
