Henningsvær is a fishing village of 517 people on the islands of Heimøya and Hellandsøya, 26 km from Svolvær and 31 km from Svolvær Airport, reached on the Fv816 from the E10. Tourism has grown steadily since the road link opened in 1983, and Store norske leksikon records several hotels, rorbu complexes, restaurants and galleries there.

The hotels in the village

Henningsvær Bryggehotell has 39 rooms along the harbour front in the centre, marketed as an all-suite hotel, with the Vind Brasserie. Trevarefabrikken has ten rooms on the upper floors of a former carpentry factory, now a cultural venue with a café, pizzeria, bar, restaurant and a wooden sauna outside. Villa Bryggekanten, Finnholmen Brygge and Skata Hotel, out on Sauøya, are in the village too. The village is small and flat, so most of it is a few minutes' walk from any of them.

Getting there

Bus 743 runs Svolvær–Kabelvåg–Henningsvær and is in the winter timetable. Visit Lofoten recommends taking it: the road in from the E10 is narrow and busy in summer and parking in the village is difficult, and it asks drivers who do come to use the larger car parks and walk. Joker Henningsvær on Dreyers gate is the village shop.

Who it suits

Climbers and ski tourers heading for the walls around Vågakallen and Festvågtinden, and visitors who want galleries, craft shops and restaurants within a short walk. It is smaller and quieter than Svolvær; the trade-off is the side road and the parking. Visit Lofoten asks visitors to keep noise down in the evenings and to ask before photographing people or their homes.
