Sørvågen is a fishing village on the E10 on the south-east side of Moskenesøya, with 395 residents across 0.6 km² and building strung along the road from Vedvika in Bogen to the mouth of Moskenesvågen. It still lands and processes fish, and it has more places to eat than either of its neighbours — which is the main reason to base a Moskenesøya trip here rather than in Reine or Å.

What they are like

Holmen Lofoten is a small family-run hotel and seasonal restaurant on a former fishing station, with restored rorbuer, modern suites and compact rooms, all with breakfast, about five minutes' drive from the Moskenes ferry. The Tide – Hotel is the hotel side of a business that also lets waterfront rorbuer, owned by two locals from Lofoten fishing families.

Getting there

Sørvågen is on the E10 itself, so there is no side road to drive. The Moskenes ferry quay for the Bodø car ferry is about 3 km, Reine about 7 km, Å about 2.5 km and Leknes Airport about 64 km. Buses 300, 742 and 772 call here. Joker Sørvågen and Matkroken Sørvågen are both on Moskenesveien.

Who it suits

Travellers arriving on the Bodø ferry who want the first village with a choice of places to eat: Visit Lofoten lists Maren Anna, Havet restaurant, Holmen Lofoten Restaurant and Kitchen On The Edge Of The World here. Walkers too — the Munken trail starts from the village, and Visit Lofoten names Sørvågen among the places to stay for Reinebringen, which begins nearer Reine. It is quieter than Reine and has more services than Å.
