Why do it
A longer day walk into the mountains of western Moskenesøya that passes lakes on the way up from Sørvågen.
Where
UT.no (Lofoten Turlag) summer access: from the car park on the west side of lake Sørvågvatnet, follow the floodlit trail towards Stuvdalsvatnet, then a clear path on the east side of the lake towards Tridalsvatnet (signed), a steep climb on a cairned path to Kjølvatna and on towards Djupfjordheia; from the top of Munken it is 20 minutes down to the cabin. UT.no notes paid parking at the start. The route is partly marked, with scattered T marks.
Practical information
- Visit Lofoten lists Munkebu as one of three tourist association cabins in Lofoten, at the foot of Hermannsdalstinden.
- General Lofoten mountain advice applies: many paths are rough and not always signposted, weather changes fast, and a map, warm layers, food and water should be carried (Visit Lofoten).
Rules and closures
- Munkebu cabin is not open for day visits or drop-ins; overnight stays must be booked through DNT's cabin booking, at least one person in the group must be a DNT member, and a standard DNT key does not fit (UT.no, checked 2026-09-16, listing shows 'Ubetjent (stengt nå)' with a season of 16 Sep–31 Dec and 6 beds).
- Lofot-Tidende reported on 28 March 2026 that the cabin had been closed since summer 2025 and that Lofoten Turlag had decided what would happen next (article paywalled; decision not read).
- Lofotodden National Park rules apply where the route enters the park, including the drone ban (Visit Lofoten; Store norske leksikon notes the marked path from Sørvågen to Munkebu).
