Haukland beach

A sheltered sandy beach on the north side of Vestvågøya, about ten minutes' drive from Leknes, with a car park beside the sand. A service building has a café, toilets open all year and activity rental. Tents are banned in marked zones.

Rules

  • Camping. The Lofoten outdoor recreation regulation bans tents all year in the mapped Haukland area (map 2-1). Haukland Beach's own site says tents are prohibited in areas A1 and A2 and welcome elsewhere in the public recreation area, which is not a campsite.
  • Fires. Norway's general ban on lighting fires in or near forest and other uncultivated land runs from 15 April to 15 September. Visit Lofoten says fires remain allowed where there is clearly no fire hazard, such as grilling on a beach well away from vegetation, or at municipal fire pits, unless the fire service declares a total ban, which also covers beaches and fire pits. The Lofoten outdoor recreation regulation recommends against disposable grills and recommends using designated fire sites.
  • Other rules. Hauklandstranda is a state-secured public outdoor recreation area owned by the Norwegian Environment Agency and managed by Vestvågøy municipality.

Getting there

By road. Haukland is a short detour from Norwegian Scenic Route Lofoten on the outer side of Vestvågøya; Visit Lofoten puts it about a 10-minute drive from Leknes. On foot, an old road runs round the mountain to Uttakleiv, and the Mannen and Himmeltinden hikes start from the beach car park.

Parking

Paid car park with room for about 100 cars, four accessible spaces, nine motorhome spaces and two bus bays (Norwegian Scenic Routes). Visit Lofoten lists NOK 20 per hour with the first 20 minutes free and a 16-hour maximum stay; pay or register straight after parking through EasyPark, the parking meter, or in the café when it is open. Coach parking must be booked in advance. Emptying motorhome toilets is not permitted. On the hottest summer days the busiest time is 13:00–15:00, according to Visit Lofoten.

Swimming

Norwegian Scenic Routes describes a sheltered sandy beach that has long been used as a swimming spot, and the Norwegian Environment Agency's register lists the area as suited to bathing and beach activities in salt water.

Facilities

Service building with a café, toilets and storage for activity equipment; the toilets are open all year (Norwegian Scenic Routes). Kayak rental and guided hikes can be booked through the visitor centre (Visit Lofoten). Café hours change with the season: the operator lists 10:00–18:00 from 21 September 2026 and 10:00–17:00 from 1 October 2026.
