Surfing at Unstad and Flakstad

Unstad on Vestvågøy is Lofoten's best-known surf spot, and Flakstad beach west of it is the other main surf beach. Visit Lofoten says the biggest swells arrive from September to April, while smaller summer waves suit beginners.

Cold-water surfing under mountains, with surf schools, board rental and places to stay at both beaches.

Where

Unstad: at the end of the road, a long sandy beach with a right and a left point break over a stony bottom; about 23 minutes' drive from Leknes (Visit Lofoten). Unstad Arctic Surf offers lessons, rental, a café, restaurant, sauna and accommodation for up to 55 people. Flakstad: a sandy beach suited to beginners and intermediates, often with smaller waves than Unstad; Lofoten Beach Camp runs a surf school, rental, camping and a beach bar.

Best time

Visit Lofoten: peak season from autumn to spring, with the most powerful swells from September to April; summer usually brings smaller, gentler waves, warmer water and midnight sun sessions, which suit beginners. Winter water can be 4–5 °C.

Unstad Arctic Surf beginner lesson (small group): about 3–4 hours; time confirmed 24 hours ahead because of tides.

Beginners should take a lesson (Visit Lofoten). Unstad Arctic Surf small-group lesson: up to 6 participants, minimum 2, listing age field 12, suitable for beginners and slightly experienced surfers. Lofoten Beach Camp offers courses for all ages.

Practical information

  • Winter gear per Visit Lofoten: 6/5 mm wetsuit, 7 mm gloves and boots; the surf schools and rental outlets supply it.
  • Change in a warm place or a heated car; getting cold before entering the water makes it hard to warm up (Visit Lofoten).
  • Visit Lofoten's surf page links wave forecasts for Unstad and Flakstad and sets out surf etiquette: priority to the surfer nearest the peak, no dropping in or snaking, and do not throw your board.
