Ski touring in Lofoten
Lofoten's peaks, most 700–800 m high with some over 1,000 m, allow ski tours from summit to shoreline. Visit Lofoten gives the main season as February to the end of April and strongly recommends a certified guide; avalanche warnings are published at varsom.no.
Why do it
Short approaches mean several summits can be reached in a day, with views over the sea and, in season, boats taking part in the Lofoten fishery below (Visit Lofoten).
Where
Visit Lofoten: the mountains around Svolvær and Laupstad on Austvågøya are usually the most snow-sure (Saufjellet, Pilan, Torskmannen, Småtindane, Rundfjellet, Kvittind); in good snow, Himmeltind and Justadtind on Vestvågøy and Stornappstind on Flakstadøya. Most guiding companies are based in Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær.
Best time
Main season early February to end of April (Visit Lofoten FAQ); its ski page also says February to May, and some seasons from November. Mild coastal climate brings rain even at altitude in midwinter.
How long it takes
Visit Lofoten: a worthwhile tour is possible in 2–3 hours. I Fri Natur and Nordnorsk Klatreskole list full days (8 hours); Nordnorsk Klatreskole also sells week packages.
Who it suits
Visit Lofoten recommends a guide unless you have avalanche training and experience. Required kit for a summit tour: avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, touring skis, boots, helmet and full winter clothing (Visit Lofoten). Listing age fields: I Fri Natur 14, Nordnorsk Klatreskole 13.

Practical information
- Rescue resources are few and far between; be ready to help yourself (Visit Lofoten).
- Lofoten Skimo, a ski-mountaineering race, is held in week 11 (Visit Lofoten).
- Visitors without winter mountain and avalanche experience should use a qualified local guide (Visit Lofoten winter page).
Rules and closures
- Check the avalanche warning at varsom.no and read the whole bulletin, not only the danger level (Visit Lofoten).
- Slopes steeper than 30 degrees and their runout zones are avalanche terrain (Visit Lofoten, citing Northern Alpine Guides).
- Kabelvågmarka: do not trample the cross-country ski tracks; there is a shooting range at the bottom of Kolbeindalen, avoid skiing down when the flag is raised (Visit Lofoten).
- The higher, north summit of Himmeltind (962 m) is closed off by a NATO radar; tours usually stop at the southern cairn (931 m) (Visit Lofoten).
Where sources differ
- Season: 'February to May' (Visit Lofoten ski page body) vs 'beginning of February until the end of April' (same page FAQ).
