Svolvær or Leknes: comparing two Lofoten airport towns

Svolvær and Leknes both have an airport served from Bodø and a range of shops. Svolvær is larger, on the harbour, with boats to Bodø and Trollfjorden. Leknes is about 68 km further west, nearer the beaches of Vestvågøy and the villages towards Reine.

Svolvær and Leknes each have an airport on their edge, a range of supermarkets and pharmacies, and a bus hub. They are about 68 km apart on the E10.

Svolvær

Svolvær is the larger of the two, with 4,807 residents (SSB, 2025), and a gateway to Lofoten for many visitors arriving from Bodø by express boat, on Hurtigruten or Havila, or by road from Evenes. Visit Lofoten describes its accommodation as one of the largest selections in Norway. Most boat trips to Trollfjorden start from the harbour, and the Fløya stairs start from town.

Leknes

Leknes is the administrative centre of Vestvågøy and, according to Store norske leksikon, a trade and service centre for the whole of Lofoten. The airport sits just north of town, with flights from Bodø and from Tromsø. It is the starting point for bus routes to Ballstad, Stamsund, Uttakleiv, Ramberg, Nusfjord and Å. Haukland beach is about 10 minutes away by car, and the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg is on the same island.

Position

Leknes sits roughly in the middle of the chain: about 57 km from Reine and 68 km from Svolvær. Svolvær is 121 km from Reine. If you plan to see both ends of Lofoten from one base, Leknes shortens the longest day trips. If most of your plans are in the east, Svolvær puts more of them within walking distance.

Shopping

Both towns have several supermarkets, a Circle K fuel station and Apotek 1 pharmacies, so either works as the place to stock up before heading to smaller villages.

Hiking Fløya and Djevelporten (590 m) from town; Festvågtinden near Henningsvær. Mannen (400 m, 2–3 hours return) and Himmeltinden (931 m) from Haukland beach; Himmeltinden is about 20 minutes' drive from Leknes.

  • You want the biggest choice of hotels, restaurants and tours.
  • You plan boat trips to Trollfjorden or want the Bodø express boat.
  • Your days will be around Kabelvåg, Henningsvær and eastern Lofoten.

Choose Leknes if

  • You want a central base with shorter drives to both Svolvær and Reine.
  • You are after beaches, surfing or the Viking museum on Vestvågøy.
  • You are flying into Leknes, including from Tromsø.
