Lofoten in summer or winter: what changes

Lofoten changes more between summer and winter than most destinations, because it lies north of the Arctic Circle. Light, weather, trails and even ferry routes shift with the season.

Summer

From late May to mid-July the sun stays above a flat horizon at midnight; MET Norway's calculations give the night of 25–26 May to the night of 17–18 July 2027 for Svolvær. Visit Lofoten suggests the outer, north-facing coast or a summit for viewing it. Visit Lofoten gives summer temperatures between 8°C and 30°C. This is the season for beaches, kayaking, surfing and summit hikes such as Festvågtinden, and the busiest time for accommodation: Visit Lofoten recommends booking June to August in advance. Reinebringen is crowded in July.

Winter

Visit Lofoten describes winter as running roughly from November to March. The polar night lasts from 7 December to 5 January at Svolvær and 10 December to 2 January at Reine (MET Norway, 2026–27), when the sky brightens for a few hours around midday without the sun rising. The northern lights season runs from late August to mid-April, and clear skies matter more than anything else. The skrei fishery runs from January to April. Daytime temperatures usually sit between −5°C and 5°C, but wind and fast weather changes are common.

Getting around

In winter the E10 can be icy, exposed bridges can close in high wind, and weather can delay flights and ferries. The Bodø–Moskenes ferry and the Svolvær express boat run through winter, while the Svolvær–Skutvik car ferry and the Arctic Route bus from Tromsø are summer services.

Spring and autumn

September combines dark evenings for the northern lights with conditions still suited to hiking, according to Visit Lofoten.

Hiking	Visit Lofoten gives summer and early autumn as peak season for Festvågtinden; Reinebringen is recommended during the midnight sun period but crowded in July. Restaurants	Seasonal places open, such as the bakery at Å and summer cafés.	Main towns keep restaurants open; some galleries, smaller museums and village restaurants close or shorten hours, including some in Henningsvær in late December and January.
Transport	Summer-only services include the Svolvær–Skutvik car ferry and the Arctic Route bus between Tromsø and Svolvær.	At least 3 mm of tyre tread in Nordland from 16 October to 30 April, and winter tyres or chains whenever needed for grip (Statens vegvesen); exposed points such as the Gimsøy bridge can close in strong wind; flights and ferries can be delayed. The Bodø–Moskenes ferry and the Svolvær express boat keep running.
Fishing season	Off season for skrei.	Skrei fishery from January to April, with stockfish drying on racks; the World Championship in Cod Fishing in Svolvær is usually in the third week of March.

Choose Summer (June–August) if

• You want long days for hiking and beaches.
• You want to see the midnight sun.
• You are travelling with children who want to swim, ride or paddle.

Choose Winter (November–March) if

• The northern lights are the main reason for the trip.
• You want to see the skrei fishery and stockfish racks.
• You prefer quieter villages and are comfortable with winter driving or buses.
