Reine or Svolvær: which base suits your Lofoten trip?

Reine and Svolvær sit at opposite ends of the main Lofoten road. By car the E10 between them is about 121 km, and bus route 300 runs the whole way from Å through Leknes to Svolvær. Where you sleep decides which half of the islands is on your doorstep.

Svolvær: services and connections

Svolvær is the largest town in Lofoten, with 4,807 residents (SSB, 2025). Svolvær Airport at Helle is about 5.3 km away, an express boat leaves for Bodø once a day, and Hurtigruten and Havila ships call on their Bergen–Kirkenes route. Visit Lofoten describes its range of accommodation as one of the largest in Norway, from chain hotels to the rorbuer on Svinøya. Most boat trips to Trollfjorden start here, and the Fløya stairs start from town.

Reine: fjord, ferry and hikes

Reine is a working fishing village of 296 people (SSB, 2025) and the administrative centre of Moskenes. The Bodø car ferry lands at Moskenes, about 5.0 km away, and a local boat crosses Reinefjorden to Vindstad for the walk to Bunes beach. Reinebringen rises beside the village; Visit Lofoten rates it demanding, crowded in July and strictly not recommended in winter. Accommodation is mostly rorbuer, spread across Reine and the neighbouring villages of Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Sørvågen and Å.

Time of year

The northern lights season runs from late August to mid-April across Lofoten, so both work for aurora trips. In winter the sun does not rise from 7 December to 5 January at Svolvær or from 10 December to 2 January at Reine (MET Norway, 2026–27), and Visit Lofoten advises building slack into plans because weather can delay flights and ferries.

If you cannot decide

Split the stay. A few nights at each end cuts out the longest drives, and the bus network links both along the E10.

Hiking	Reinebringen (484 m) starts near the village: steep stairs, crowded in July, not recommended for young children and strictly not recommended in winter. Bunes beach is an easy 2.8 km walk from Vindstad.	Fløya and Djevelporten (590 m) start from the centre or Blåtindveien: the stairs are easy, the gate medium and the summit demanding.
Families	Visit Lofoten grades the Bunes beach walk easy and suitable for everyone and calls the trip perfect for families; Reinebringen is not recommended for young children.	The Lofoten Aquarium at Storvågan, Kabelvåg, about 6.4 km away, is on Visit Lofoten's family list for its seal and otter feeding.

Choose Reine if

• You want to be close to Reinefjorden, Bunes beach and the hikes of Moskenesøya.
• You are arriving or leaving on the Bodø–Moskenes car ferry.
• You plan to spend most days between Hamnøy and Å.

Choose Svolvær if

• You are flying into Svolvær or taking the express boat from Bodø.
• You want the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and bookable tours in one place.
• You plan day trips to Kabelvåg, Henningsvær or Trollfjorden.
