Kvalvika

A sandy bay on the north-west coast of Moskenesøya in Lofotodden National Park, with no road access. The usual routes start at Innersand or Fredvang school near Fredvang, or cross Skoren from Torsfjorden. There are no toilets or bins at the beach.

Rules

  • Camping. Camping is allowed in Lofotodden National Park on hard-wearing ground, at least 150 m from inhabited houses or cabins, for no more than two nights in the same spot. The park asks visitors not to camp in vulnerable areas.
  • Drones. Drones are banned in Lofotodden National Park under the park's protection regulation (§ 10), unless the management authority grants an exemption. Visit Lofoten's drone guide names Kvalvika Beach and the upper half of Ryten.
  • Fires. Lofotodden National Park allows fires only on the sand or at established fire spots, never on vegetation or bare rock, and reminds visitors of the general fire ban from 15 April to 15 September.
  • Dogs. Dogs must be on a lead from 1 April to 20 August across Norway; Flakstad municipality extends this to 15 November in areas with grazing animals. Visit Lofoten says dogs may need to be carried over parts of the way down to the beach.
  • Cycling. Cycling is not allowed on the trail from Torsfjorden to Kvalvika; e-bikes count as motorised traffic and are not allowed in the park.
  • Other rules. Trail works: Visit Lofoten gives 22 June to 30 September 2026; the national park's current-conditions notice runs to 1 October 2026 and posts each closure day in advance.

Getting there

No road. Visit Lofoten says Kvalvika's two beaches can only be reached on foot or by boat. The most used path starts near Fredvang at the Innersand car park or Fredvang school; Visit Lofoten gives about 3 km to the beach and about 1.5 hours one way, with a fork at the lake Forsvatnet between the beach and the top of Ryten. A second trail runs from Torsfjorden over Skoren, where the national park describes the terrain as rugged and rocky. Visit Lofoten says the hike suits families with children aged about 10 and over who are used to mountain walking. From 22 June to 30 September 2026 (Visit Lofoten; the park's own notice runs to 1 October) the park is rebuilding the trail from Kvalvika towards Ryten; on helicopter transport days the park closes the paths from Innersand, or sections of them (on 11 September 2026 only the Innersand–Kvalvika section closed and Ryten could still be climbed from Innersand), while the Torsfjorden trail stays open.

Parking

Two main car parks near Fredvang, both paid, and both fill early in high season. Innersand, at the end of the Innersand road, is privately run, with toilet, drinking water and sorted waste; Visit Lofoten lists fees from NOK 100 for cars and motorhomes plus NOK 100 for an overnight stay, payable by cash, Vipps or card, and the national park says payment is at a staffed booth. Fredvang school has the largest capacity, is paid through an EasyPark machine and has EV charging. Torsfjorden rest area has a toilet and few spaces and suits cyclists. The national park warns that parking in passing places or ditches can lead to a fine.

Swimming

Lofotodden National Park describes Kvalvika as an open beach facing the ocean, with cold water all year and no lifeguard, and advises swimming at your own judgement and taking care in waves and currents.

Facilities

None at the beach. Lofotodden National Park says there are no toilets along the path or at Kvalvika and no bins in the park; the nearest toilets are at the Innersand car park and the Torsfjorden rest area. WAG toilet bags are available at the visitor centre in Reine and the tourist information in Ramberg.

How long is the walk to Kvalvika beach?
Visit Lofoten gives about 3 km from the trailhead to the beach and about 1.5 hours each way from the Fredvang side. The alternative route from Torsfjorden over Skoren is rugged and rocky in places, according to Lofotodden National Park.
